The Untouchable God - Theyyam
The word “Theyyam” is believed to be derived from “Daivam,” meaning god. In this practice, performers often from specific marginalized communities transform into deities through elaborate costumes, face painting, and intense rituals. This transformation is not symbolic alone; it is believed that the performer becomes a living embodiment of the deity, bridging the gap between the divine and the human.
The performers mostly come from communities in Kerala that have historically been pushed to the margins once labeled “untouchable,” denied entry into temples, and kept outside the social and spiritual mainstream. And yet, during Theyyam, everything changes.
